Strengthening Capacity to Design and Implement Energy Sector Projects

Project Details

Nossal Institute will support the Asian Development Bank's interventions aimed at improving energy security and the sustainable transition of the electricity sector in the Maldives, in selected outer islands of the Preparing Outer Islands for Sustainable Energy Development (POISED) project, as well as relevant outputs of the Accelerating Sustainable System Development Using Renewable Energy (ASSURE) project, to attain a high level of renewable penetration through technological advances and deepening engagement with project partners and civil society on mainstreaming gender equity and social inclusion in project implementation to ensure a Just Transition, such that benefits are shared equally, and no individual, community or region is left behind.

Specifically, the work will:

  • Examine community energy resilience, within a Just transition framework, based on an integrated and multidimensional approach, with a focus on energy, linked to climate and economic resilience, informed by an analysis of community vulnerability, focusing on gender equality and social inclusion.
  • Prepare a pilot case study to assess the preparedness of Island Development Councils and the Women's Development Committees to manage the operations of the solar PV based ice-making plants in the smaller outer islands of Buruni, Vilufushi, Medhufushi and Landhoo, and the potential impact of these plants on GESI inclusive local economic development and women's empowerment.
  • Support capacity development of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, FENAKA Corporation Limited.
  • Pilot test and promote disaster-resilient, innovative, and gender- and socially inclusive renewable energy-based farming technologies.
