Mass Media Representation of Suicide in Iran: A Comprehensive Analysis

Description of PhD project

This research constitutes a critical endeavor with four key aims. Firstly, it aims to assess whether media reports of suicides in Iran accurately reflect the epidemiological data on suicide. Secondly, it seeks to evaluate the quality of media reporting of suicide news in Iran by comparing it against the stringent guidelines set forth by the World Health Organization. The third aim involves qualitative interviews to explore the perspectives and firsthand experiences of media professionals regarding the intricate process of reporting suicide-related news in Iranian media. Lastly, the study will examine internet search queries related to suicide in Iran, particularly following media coverage of a celebrity suicide. These interconnected aims aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between media and suicide in Iran, ultimately contributing to evidence-based interventions and responsible reporting practices for effective suicide prevention.
