Commercial Determinants of Health
Research Overview
The commercial determinants of health (CDoH) are the ways in which businesses influence health and equity (for better and for worse – we look largely at the latter). Our teaching and research aim to expose and challenge harmful CDoH, while equipping health and other professions with the tools, resources and knowledge to advance a world in which people and the planet are prioritised over profits. Our projects explore different facets of CDoH: how business lobbying can delay and weaken public health policies; how data science can improve the visibility of corporate practices; how public health and other stakeholders can protect public health in the face of powerful commercial obstruction; how privatisation of health and social services influences health and equity; and how we can advance health promoting business practices. We regularly collaborate with government and non-governmental organisations, policymakers and researchers around the world. Engagement and policy impact are at the core of our efforts to shift the balance of power in favour of health and equity.
