New - Centre for Research Excellence in Healthy Housing

The new Centre of Research Excellence in Healthy Housing led by Professor Rebecca Bentley, Centre for Health Equity, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. This Centre will provide Australian-specific evidence and work with key stakeholders to make positive change and build capacity in the overlapping domains of housing and health.  Announced by the Minister for Health Greg Hunt, funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), they were awarded $2.5 million, and will run from 2020 to 2025.  It involves over 20 researchers from across Australia and the world.

A quarter of Australia’s disease burden is comprised of cardiovascular disease, COPD, anxiety, depression, asthma, falls and injury. All such health issues have been at least partly attributed to housing. While other high-income countries have actively and successfully used housing to reduce their burden of disease, Australian policy and research has failed to bridge disciplinary silos. ...
