World Sight Day 2020

Thursday 8 October 2020 is World Sight Day.

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. Established in 2000, World Sight Day is the main advocacy event for raising awareness about blindness and vision impairment for VISION 2020: The Right to Sight, a global initiative created by WHO and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

Social Media Tiles and Messaging for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

We have partnered with The Fred Hollows Foundation to design and develop key messaging and social media tiles that are aimed at encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to keep looking after their eyes and vision, even during COVID-19. The first tile encourages community members to have an eye check if they notice a change in their vision. The second tile encourages community members who have been receiving treatment for an eye health condition, to continue to do so, where safe.

Please note files can open differently depending on the web browser you are using. You may need to right click and 'Save Image As' in order to download the .JPG files.

We encourage those who use the social media tiles to tag IEH and the Fred Hollows Foundation and use the hashtag #WorldSightDayAU

‘Share Your Story’ Initiative Champions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health

share your story and personal reflections logos side by side This #WorldSightDayAU also marks one year since the launch of the ‘Share Your Story’ initiative. This initiative aims to champion eye health and vision care activities and significant achievements in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health across the sector.

Over the past 12 months we have welcomed stories highlighting the important work of individuals, organisations, regional stakeholder groups, and collaborations, relating to efforts to close the gap for vision.

Over the past 12 months we have shared 16 stories, including personal reflections from eye health champions and eye health success stories from across the country.

These success stories inspire others. They allow others to learn of and from others’ experiences and encourage good ideas and successful activities to be taken up by others. We do not need to ‘reinvent the wheel’, it’s important we continue to use the power of collective and shared efforts to advance Indigenous eye health, and close the gap for vision.

This World Sight Day, we are inviting you to inspire others! We would love to hear ‘your story’, share your success, and also your challenges in Indigenous eye health.

If you, your organisation, regional eye stakeholder group or another collaboration wish to inspire others and ‘share your story’ about Indigenous eye health, please fill out your details here or contact IEH, Indigenous-EyeHealth@unimelb.edu.au or call (03) 834 49320.
