Dr Alex Robinson

Disability Inclusion for Health and Development

Dr Alex Robinson joined the Nossal Institute in 2017. He was previously Country Director for Indonesia and the Philippines and global Disability Inclusion Adviser for ASB, one of Germany’s largest social welfare organisations.

Alex has a PhD in Development Studies from the UK. His PhD research in rural Java examined the role of information in an information communication technology (ICT) based poverty reduction programme. He is Co-founder of the Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction Network.

Alex’s research concerns information, inclusion and risk. He has an interest in development programming and information access and content in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and prevention and has worked in emergency response and recovery programs in Indonesia, Haiti, the Philippines and Nepal.

Alex’s research has included DRR education in school settings and the capacity building of disabled people’s organisations as DRR advocates. He developed the Information-Action (IA) model as a simplified guide for programme teams to better deliver disability inclusive DRR. The model has been applied by agencies to improve the participation of people with disability in DRR in Indonesia, the Philippines, Georgia, Nepal and Haiti.

Alongside practical programming solutions, Alex has an interest in policy and the relationship between disaster risk, inclusion and poverty reduction in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.

His goal is to acknowledge and appreciate the complexity of development while delivering practical and relevant inclusive development solutions.
