Dr Shazra Abbas is an obstetrician, gynaecologist, and public health researcher who specialises in analysing health systems with a particular focus on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH), Sexual and Reproductive health (SRH), HIV/Tuberculosis and community health initiatives.

As a clinician, Shazra has supervised and supported health teams from tertiary hospitals to village health centres to deliver high-quality and responsive care. Over the past 15 years, Shazra has worked extensively with international organisations, including UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, and UNAIDS as well as government health departments in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

In her various roles, Shazra has contributed to the development of national policies, strategies and guidelines on SRH, Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC), and communicable diseases, co-designed healthcare initiatives aimed at ensuring access to quality and respectful HIV/SRH services for communities. Additionally, she has played a pivotal role in evaluating health systems response, particularly at the primary healthcare level, in many South Asian and African countries.

Since 2005, Shazra has served as a master trainer, training healthcare workers in various critical health domains, including EmOC, SRH, Universal Health Coverage, clinical guidelines on triage, and emergency preparedness and response.
