Pacific Disability Statistics Guidebook

Project Details

People with disabilities in the Pacific face significant inequalities and barriers in various aspects of life, including education, employment, healthcare, and social protection. Reliable statistics help identify these issues and inform policies to address them.

The Pacific Group on Disability Statistics (PGDS) brings together technical partners and country leads to support Pacific Island countries to produce disability statistics. With the support of the Government of Australia, PGDS is leading a project in 2024-2027 aimed at improving data collection and analysis related to disability in the Pacific region. As part of this project, the Nossal Institute, in consultation with SPC and regional stakeholders, will develop the Regional Guidebook on Disability Statistics. This guidebook will align with international recommendations while effectively addressing the unique context of the Pacific region.

The Guidebook focuses on developing standardised guidelines on disability data collection and analysis that fit the needs of small island developing states in the Pacific. This guidance will enable streamlined, efficient and standardised collection and production of quality disability statistics. It aims to support the work of national statistical offices (NSOs), government agencies, organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) and other relevant stakeholders who undertake and support disability data collection in censuses and national sample surveys
