Strategies to improve oral health among children and adolescents with Intellectual and Developmental Disability in rural India
Philcy Philip is a community dentist working at the Bangalore Baptist Hospital, in Karnataka, India. He completed his Masters in Dental Public & Primary Health at the University of Western Australia and has been involved with initiating and organizing dental outreach programs for the marginalised and disadvantaged communities in the outskirts of the city of Bangalore.
Children and adolescents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities have been found to have worse oral health than the general population. This disparity is exaggerated in rural communities where access to care is restricted. Oral health is not a priority for carers and dental care is mostly ignored. Dentists in rural communities are ill equipped to deal with these issues. As a result, children with IDD suffer greatly because of poor oral health.
This project will explore oral health issues in children and adolescents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities living in rural India and look into strategies and interventions that could help improve oral health in this cohort.
