Collaboration on One Health Economics Research for Systems (COHERES)

The Nossal Institute for Global Health is leading a new project funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the Australian Centre for Health Security, called Collaboration on One Health Economic Research for Systems (COHERES). COHERES aims to improve collaboration between human and animal health sectors and to use incentive-based regulation to intervene in veterinary markets in Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam to improve health security outcomes.

The objectives of the project are to:
  • Analyse the supply of veterinary services  (including public/private mix, roles played by various providers and the extent to which key functions needed for One Health are covered)
  • Analyse the public and private demand for veterinary services (including their determinants and how they are changing)
  • Understand regulation of the market (role played by government, identifying strengths and achievements and possible reforms/new initiatives)
  • Engage policy makers in dialogue activities based on the needs of each country.
The first meeting of the project was recently held with key project partners from Cambodia including the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Royal University of Agriculture and the National Institute of Public Health.
