PhD Completion seminar - Marie-Anne Boujaoude

Marie-Anne Boujaoude presented her PhD completion seminar on Wednesday 22 October 2025, as part of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health Seminar Series. Marie-Anne is a PhD student with the Economics of Global Health and Infectious Diseases Unit at Melbourne Health Economics, supervised by A/Prof Natalie Carvalho (Primary Supervisor), Professor Kim Dalziel, and Professor Nancy Devlin.

Her thesis, titled “Advancing New Methods in Addressing Equity in Health Technology Assessment – An Application to Australia”, investigates how equity is currently addressed in health technology assessment (HTA), explores societal preferences for reducing health inequalities, and demonstrates a practical application of distributional cost-effectiveness analysis (DCEA) in the context of vaccine policy. Throughout her research, Marie-Anne has focused on developing innovative methodological tools, generating evidence about public concerns for inequality, and applying those insights to the Australian health economic environment.

In addition to her research contributions, Marie-Anne has played a key role in advancing international dialogue on equity in HTA. She organised an interdisciplinary workshop on health inequality aversion, in Switzerland, funded by the Brocher Foundation, bringing together global experts to explore practical and ethical considerations. She also co-leads the Equity in Asia Pacific Health Technology Assessment (EquitAPHTA) network alongside collaborators from HITAP Thailand, fostering regional collaboration and capacity-building to embed equity in HTA practice and policy across the Asia-Pacific. She also co-leads the EquitAP-HTA consortium, approved by the Asia Pacific Observatory for Health Systems and Policies.
