Melisa is a PhD candidate with the Palliative Care Economics (PaCE) unit at the University of Melbourne, examining the impacts of water fluoridation in Chile on adult and ageing populations, with research that connects population health, prevention, and public policy. She is guided by Dr Chris Schilling, Dr Jack McLaughlin, and Dr Rodrigo Mariño, and her PhD is supported by a Chilean government scholarship.

Since 2017, she has been working as an academic at Universidad Austral de Chile, teaching public health-related subjects.
