What's helpful and unhelpful when recovering from a disaster?

Abstract:

Disasters are highly disruptive events, which impact millions of people around the world every year. There is a general agreement that we should expect disasters to become more frequent, widespread and severe in the future.

Despite this, relatively little is known about what individuals who are impacted by disasters consider to be enablers and barriers to effective recovery.

This research uses a qualitative approach with a novel data collection method of letter writing to explore what people in Australia and New Zealand consider helpful and unhelpful recovering from the impacts of disasters.
