Congratulations to Dr Dinh Bui on winning  the Chancellor's Prize as one of six awards for excellence in the PhD thesis passed in 2019. This is a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding achievements during his PhD. Congratulations also to his supervisors (Prof Shyamali Dharmage -principal supervisor, Dr Caroline Lodge, Dr John Burgess, Dr Minh Bui) and advisory panel (Prof Mark Jenkins -Chair, Prof Haydn Walters). Dinh completed his PhD in the Allergy and Lung Health Unit, Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, MSPGH. His PhD focused on risk factors for and consequences of lung function deficits throughout the lifespan. His PhD work has been published in highly ranked journals (e.g. peer reviewed manuscripts in Lancet Respiratory Medicine and American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care and Medicine) and has already had exceptional impact on knowledge and health and has contributed to major paradigms shifts in the landscape of COPD. His highly cited (Field-weighted citation impact (FWCI)=20.5, 100cit, Lancet Respir Med 2018) study on lung function trajectories and COPD risk created the paradigm of early origins of COPD. Once considered an adult disease of smokers, it is now known to frequently start in childhood. These findings attracted worldwide media attention and impacted health professionals/public education (94 news outlets, 8 health blogs, BBC live radio interview invitation, Altmetric top 5%). Significantly, this work was adopted into COPD guidelines and led to a new field of research (pre-COPD) and an European Respiratory Society initiative on Precision Respiratory Medicine (CADSET). He has also been awarded the Picchi Brothers Foundation Prize for Excellence in Asthma Research for his PhD work.
