Advancing railway suicide prevention

Project Details

This program of work encompasses the following three aims: (1) to analyse the factors contributing to railway suicides to inform evidence-based strategies for prevention; (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of new and existing railway suicide interventions; and (3) to provide practical advice to policy-makers and railway industry representatives about effective ways to reduce railway suicides. The program of work includes projects that utilise coronial and railway operator datasets to understand where and how railway suicides are occurring across Australia, and includes interviews with people with lived experience of suicide to understand why people choose the railway as a means of suicide. The work also includes components that evaluate railway suicide prevention interventions such as online suicide awareness training for railway staff, and includes further research to investigate ongoing questions related to restricting access to means in the railway environment.
