Housing, social wellbeing and climate change resilience in Australia

Project Details

Project details

This project will provide evidence to support strategic housing responses to social, economic, and environmental challenges. It will test the social outcomes of recent rental reforms, energy efficiency initiatives, post-disaster housing strategies and if the needs of vulnerable groups, including low-income households and private rental tenants, are addressed by these reforms.

Adopting causally focused statistical approaches and linking individual-level longitudinal data, area-level administrative data, policy rollout data, and climate and weather data, this project will 1) generate new evidence that is rigorous, causally focused, and generalisable; 2) lead to better understanding of ways to improve housing suitability of vulnerable groups; and 3) inform the development of climate adaptation strategies in the domain of housing across Australia.

The project will be guided by the following research themes:

  • Research theme #1: To understand how rental regulations and reforms impact housing and social wellbeing of households in the private rental sector.
  • Research theme #2: To understand how energy efficiency initiatives impact housing and social wellbeing of households in private rental and household with low incomes.
  • Research theme #3: To understand housing circumstances following natural disasters and their impact on social wellbeing and recovery in Australia.
