Indigenous Equity Project

Project Details

With increasing genomics capability, there are corresponding opportunities for positive impacts on clinical medicine. However, the limited research on Aboriginal genetic and genomic health points towards inequity in service use.

In Victoria, there is currently insufficient information available to inform policy for the delivery of culturally appropriate and accessible genetic health services for indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse people.

This project will:

  • Explore the extent to which the current administrative databases of Victorian genetic services enable examination of equity in referrals, attendance, and service provision for Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
  • Ascertain referral rates to and appointment attendance at Victorian genetic services for Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse Victorians.
  • Identify common insights and themes through examination of referral and attendance data.
  • Develop recommendations to improve the ability of Victorian genetic services to better meet patient and family needs, and to support improved access to follow-up services.
