Development of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program Guidelines and Shared Decision Making and Informed Consent Materials.

Project Details

The project team, led by A/Prof Nicole Rankin (Head, Evaluation and Implementation Science Unit), brought together experts in implementation science, respiratory health, cancer screening, tobacco control and smoking cessation, primary care, and consumer advocates. The purpose of the program guidelines is to guide the delivery of a safe, effective, and high-quality National Lung Cancer Screening Program for the Australian community, while shared decision-making resources enable people to make an informed choice about lung cancer screening with the support of their healthcare provider.

The development of the program guidelines and shared decision-making resources involved extensive and comprehensive consultations with clinical, policy and community stakeholders across all States and Territories, with a specific focus on engaging the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce and community members led by A/Prof Lisa Whop and A/Prof Raglan Maddox from Yardhura Walani, Australian National University. The program guidelines were also further refined through public consultation in December 2024.

This suite of work was delivered to Cancer Australia in March 2025.
