Strengthening Care for Children: Metropolitan and Rural Stepped-Wedge Trials

Project Details

Despite the increase in Australia’s paediatric population, and the increased prevalence of chronic conditions amongst children, children account for a decreasing number of consultations in General Practice clinics. Further to this, children make up a high proportion of low-urgency Emergency Department attendances, which contributes significantly to the overburdening of hospital services. Evidence suggests that many of these children could be appropriately managed in GP settings. The Strengthening Care for Children (SC4C) trial is a multisite stepped wedge randomised controlled trial that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a GP-Paediatrician co-consultation model of care to reduce referrals to ED and Outpatient clinics. Melbourne Health Economics aims to evaluate the cost- effectiveness of the SC4C model of care compared with standard GP care.
