Colorectal cancer survivors are at risk of developing subsequent primary cancer (SPC) in both primary index and extracolonic sites, that is neither a recurrence nor spread of the original cancer. Currently, there is no way to determine which survivors are at the highest risk of SPC. To develop a risk prediction model for a SPC, my PhD will study 7,500 people from the Colon Cancer Family Registry over 15 years and validate the model using an independent cohort of colorectal cancer survivors from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer study. This model will help clinicians determine which survivors are at the highest risk of subsequent extracolonic primary cancer, allowing for early detection measures.
