Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, characterized by impaired skin barrier function it affects both children and adults worldwide and it has a considerable impact on their quality of life. There is limited information on the environmental factors determining eczema development and its phenotypes. For these reasons, my doctoral research aims are: to assess (1) if exposure to air pollution is associated with the incidence and prevalence of atopic and non-atopic eczema in middle-aged adults, (2) the associations between water hardness types and eczema symptoms development (3) potential associations between occupational exposures and eczema prevalence in middle-aged adults and (4) eczema latent classes from birth to late childhood and its association to risk factors and allergic comorbidities in early adulthood. The strengths of this body of research are (1) the data used for this work came from large population-based prospective cohort studies, (2) the use of well-characterized definitions of allergies and (3) the use of contemporary statistical methods including multilevel modelling and latent class analysis. A better understanding of the environmental factors and eczema presentation can lead to improved preventive and therapeutic interventions.
