Trachoma Health Promotion Transition Update
Minum Barreng has been actively working with NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) since 2024 to support the transition of national trachoma health promotion activities and resources from Minum Barreng to NACCHO.
Minum Barreng’s trachoma health promotion activities have been funded by the Australian Government since 2015, and Minum Barreng’s 2025-26 funding agreement with the Australian Government included the development of a transition plan with NACCHO and the ACCHO sector, to support the transfer of resources and knowledge. This reflected a shared commitment to strengthening Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled leadership in health promotion and supporting sustainable, culturally informed approaches to maintaining Australia's trachoma elimination achievements.
Unfortunately, Minum Barreng has been advised that Australian Government funding will not be available to support ongoing national trachoma health promotion activities from July 2026, as originally planned.
While this is disappointing, particularly following the World Health Organisation announcement on 29 April 2026 that Australia has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, maintaining community awareness and health promotion remains an important part of protecting these achievements and supporting the long-term prevention of trachoma in at-risk communities.
Minum Barreng and NACCHO remain committed to ensuring the valuable trachoma health promotion resources developed over many years continue to be available to the sector.
Current plans are now to transition responsibility for these resources to NACCHO by September 2026, where they will be available for download through the NACCHO website.
We are also continuing to explore opportunities to secure funding to support the ongoing distribution of physical (hard copy) resources through the Australian Government’s National Mail and Marketing (NMM) services, ensuring communities can continue to access these resources free of charge where possible.
Minum Barreng and NACCHO will continue working together throughout the transition period and will provide further updates to the sector as arrangements progress.
