Close the Gap features Minum Barreng

Minum Barreng has featured in a recently released Close the Gap Campaign internal report as an example of CTG Member Allyship in Action. ACOSS (Australian Council of Social Services) and PHAA (Public Health Association of Australia) were also highlighted. We appreciate the Campaign allowing us to share this article and greatly value the Campaign’s acknowledgment of Minum Barreng’s work and contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health.

The Close the Gap is a social justice ‘people's campaign' that was launched in 2007 following Professor Tom Calma’s 2005 Social Justice Report which emphasised health as human right and challenged Australian governments to bring about health equality within a generation. The Close the Gap Statement of Intent was signed in 2008.

In 2027, the Campaign will mark 20 years of advocacy. Minum Barreng recognises the tremendous and persistent work of the Campaign over this time - amplifying the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities and calling for a just Australia in which the rights to health equity, equality and improved life outcomes are fully realised.

Minum Barreng has been a proud member of the Close the Gap Campaign Steering Committee since 2016.
