Agreements, Treaties and Negotiated Settlements (ATNS) Database and Website Project

Project Details

Agreement making, treaties and negotiated settlements with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are clear and critical  mechanisms for economic development and nation building.

The Agreements, Treaties and Negotiated Settlements (ATNS) Project began in January 2002 with an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant. The ATNS Database is the only resource of its kind that captures and demonstrates the range and variety of agreement making with Indigenous people that occur in Australia and in other parts of the world.

In partnership with the National Native TItle Council, the ATNS team are undertaking an audit of Australian agreements; broadening and updating the agreements on the ATNS database;  redesigning  the database portal to improve the efficiency of data entry and analysis; and launching a new website showcasing the range of agreement making activities in Australia and overseas (launch in late 2020).

These activities focus on supporting information access by  general audiences, including Traditional Owners, community organisations and policy makers.
