Prof Marcia Langton AO named inaugural Rechnitz Memorial Award recipient
Melbourne Laureate Professor Marcia Langton AO was named the inaugural recipient of the The Rechnitz Memorial Award at an event in Sydney.
Professor Langton is Associate Provost, Foundational Chair of Australian Indigenous Studies and head of the Indigenous Studies Unit (Onemda, School of population and Gobal Health, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) at the University of Melbourne.
A descendant of the Yiman and Bidjara nations, Professor Langton has spent more than four decades championing the rights, voices, and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Rechnitz Memorial Award recognises excellence in research leadership and advancement of knowledge of Indigenous society, culture and language.

In 2003 Professor Langton was the first Indigenous scholar to be made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
The award is made through the Wilhelm, Martha and Otto Rechnitz Memorial Fund and managed by the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
