The problem

The Mekong region is recognised as a "hot spot" for the emergence of new diseases, including zoonotic diseases, due to rapid economic development, urbanization, and changing farming practice. The Region had limited knowledge of the One Health approach in the animal-health and human-health sectors. To tackle emerging zoonotic disease threats, One Health approaches need to be further developed.

The research

The Nossal Institute led cross-sectoral research with participants from animal health and human health to understand how veterinary service markets in Cambodia might be better managed and more balanced between incentive management and command-and-control approaches and to the build capacities and relationships of stakeholders.

The impact

This work has had a significant impact on health security in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam, laying  a strong foundation for advancing One Health goals in the Mekong region.  The project provided valuable data and evidence to inform policy decisions, helping to design interventions that improve both agricultural production and national health outcomes.
