The problem
The prevalence of domestic, family and sexual violence against children and young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds remains unknown. Most available data on migrant and refugee children’s experiences of violence are reported through parental, carer or service provider perspectives. This means that the voices of children and young go unheard, which results in their support needs remaining largely unknown and subsequently unmet.
The research
FAIR is a mixed-methods participatory research project that seeks to strengthen service system capacity to implement intersectional and culturally responsive supports for migrant and refugee children impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence
The impact
We established a lived-experience youth advisory group to impact and relevance. We have completed Digital Storytelling workshops with young migrants affected by family violence, fostering creative skills and amplifying youth voices. Research findings were also incorporated into Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network’s national policy launch, centring family violence against children as one of the network’s primary issues for advocacy.
