Bio: Sheenagh’s research investigates how housing experiences shape the mental health and wellbeing of people from refugee backgrounds throughout their settlement journey in Australia. With professional experience in refugee health and public health research, she brings both academic and practical insight to the study. Her work explores the intersection of housing, social connection, and mental health using qualitative and quantitative methods, including participatory approaches. The research aims to inform more equitable and responsive housing and settlement policies for refugee communities.
Abstract: This research examines housing as a social determinant of refugee mental health and wellbeing in Australia. Using a mixed-methods approach—scoping review, interviews, Photovoice, and longitudinal survey analysis—the study finds that stable, appropriate housing underpins safety, belonging, and recovery. Refugees viewed housing as more than shelter; it is central to identity and stability. Intersecting personal and systemic barriers contributed to housing precarity and poor mental health. Findings underscore the need for tailored housing policies that support mental health and integration.
