No One Left Behind: Strengthening culturally safe cervical cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Presenter's biography:
Kristy Meiselbach is a proud Gunditjmara woman and PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne. Her research explores culturally safe approaches to improving cervical cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and people with a cervic. Alongside her PhD, Kristy contributes to First Nations research capacity building through the Lowitja First Nations Health and Wellbeing Journal. She is committed to conducting community-led research that informs policy, strengthens health services and supports equitable cervical cancer elimination.
Abstract:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to experience disproportionately higher rates of cervical cancer despite Australia's progress towards elimination. While improvements in screening have reduced disease burden, less is known about experiences of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up after an HPV-positive result. This PhD partners with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to identify opportunities to strengthen culturally safe care pathways, improve access to colposcopy and treatment, and generate evidence to support equitable cervical cancer elimination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
