Title: Unseen Struggles: Merging Chronic Pain, Disability, and Mental Health in Pursuit of Health Equity

Location: Lecture Theatre B103, Basement, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton

Award Recipient: Dr Manasi Murthy Mittinty

Abstract: Chronic pain, disability, and mental health often intersect, creating a complex web of challenges that leaves individuals marginalized and unheard. These conditions don’t exist in isolation, they intertwine, compounding each other’s impact on physical, emotional, and social well-being. This demonstrates the inseparable connection between mind and body, where pain affects mental health, and mental health influences experience of pain. The result is a cycle of neglect within siloed healthcare systems that fails to recognize the full extent of these intertwined struggles. To achieve true health equity, we must break down these silos, creating a holistic approach to care that addresses the whole person, mind and body alike. By embracing the interconnectedness of chronic pain, disability, and mental health, we can provide more compassionate, inclusive, and effective solutions.
