Title: Commercial determinants and market power in Australian health services: An analysis of corporate growth and consolidation in the private health sector

Abstract: Public versus private healthcare remains a live conversation which generates deep political and philosophical divisions and conflicting approaches in health system delivery. This thesis aims to examine how consolidation and corporate growth are reshaping the Australian healthcare system. It does so by analysing patterns of corporate expansion, power and control, and by evaluating differing perspectives on private-sector involvement in both health services and the broader health sector. Through understanding how provision, governance and equity are influenced by corporate growth in the delivery of healthcare, it is hoped that population health outcomes, regulation and policy can improve.

Bio: Tom is a MSPGH PhD candidate at the Centre for Health Policy. His research focuses on private sector consolidation, market power, and privatisation in healthcare. Tom also works as a Research Assistant and Tutor within the school. Prior to joining MSPGH, Tom worked at King's College London, the University of Sussex and for different charities based in the UK, Bangladesh and New Zealand.
