A/Prof Natalie Carvalho Elected Vice President of AHES

We are delighted to announce that Associate Professor Natalie Carvalho, Head of the Global Health and Infectious Diseases Unit within Melbourne Health Economics, has been elected Vice President of the Australian Health Economics Society (AHES).

Natalie is a leading health economist with over a decade of experience in applied research, policy engagement, and academic leadership. Since completing her PhD at Harvard University in 2012, she has been based at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health (MSPGH), where she leads a dynamic portfolio of research on vaccine economics, maternal and child health, and neglected tropical diseases. Her work spans model-based and trial-based economic evaluations in low-, middle-, and high-income settings, with a strong focus on equity and impact.

A long-standing and deeply engaged member of AHES, Natalie is well known for her commitment to mentoring and fostering the next generation of health economists. In 2019, she launched the AHES Mentoring Program, which she led for two years and has since grown into a widely valued initiative supporting early-to-mid-career members across the Society. She also serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the International Health Economics Association (iHEA) Mentoring Program, and convenes the AHES Special Interest Group on the Economics of Infectious Diseases.

Beyond her research and policy work, Natalie is a dedicated teacher and academic supervisor. She leads the Health Economics and Economic Evaluation Specialisation within the University of Melbourne’s Master of Public Health (MPH) and coordinates the program’s Research Capstone Projects. She has received teaching and supervision awards from both Harvard and MSPGH, and is a tireless advocate for inclusive and supportive academic environments.

We warmly congratulate Natalie on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to her continued leadership in advancing the field of health economics in Australia and globally.
