Title: Understanding the mental health impacts of mould-affected housing and barriers to remediation

Supervisors: Prof Rebecca Bentley (CHP, MSPGH), Dr Ang Li (CHP, MSPGH)

Abstract: Evidence suggests that dampness and mould in dwellings is a health hazard, which can increase the risk of allergic and respiratory symptoms and conditions. However, few studies examine the mental health impacts of living in such an environment. Additionally, while it is acknowledged that removing mould and remediating homes improves health, no existent studies address barriers and facilitators to such remediation. Using a mixed methods approach, this PhD aims to explore the impact of residential dampness and mould exposure on mental health and barriers and facilitators to remediation. This thesis aims to provide evidence to inform action against dampness and mould, and to strengthen the regulatory framework governing housing conditions.
