Supervisors: Associate Professor Ros McDougall, Associate Professor in Health Ethics, Health and Society Unit, Melbourne School of Global and Population Health; Professor Clare Delany, Associate Professor in Health Professions Education, Department of Medical Education, Melbourne Medical School
Abstract: Biological changes occur with aging. However, negative attitudes towards older age are common and can influence health. In this seminar, I discuss philosophical ideas about ageing and the intersection with ethical concepts about health treatment for older people. I will describe the empirical component of my project which explores the viewpoints of both doctors and older people about how an older person’s age is considered in clinical decision-making. The combined empirical data, philosophical and ethical review aims to address the question of ‘When is it ethically justifiable to use age in clinical decision making with an older person?
