Title: Mental health of young carers
Supervisors: A/Prof Tania King; Dr Ankur Singh; Dr George Disney
Abstract: This thesis quantified the mental health effects of being a young carer. Drawing on population-based datasets and robust methods for causal inference in epidemiological research, results provide evidence of a mental health penalty of young caring, particularly among those undertaking substantial demands. While the mental health impacts of caring did not appear to vary by gender, school bullying mediated a proportion of these effects. Results highlight the need to support young carers. Further research should investigate potential avenues of support.
Bio: Ludmila is a PhD student and research assistant. Her primary focus of research is social epidemiology. Ludmila works in a variety of projects investigating the impact of unpaid labour on mental health. Her PhD focuses on quantifying the mental health effects of informal care among young carers and identifying the causal mechanisms through which young caregiving may lead to poor mental health.
