Bio: Jen is a PhD Candidate and Research Fellow in social epidemiology at the Centre for Health Policy at MSPGH. Jen works in a variety of projects related to social and health inequalities, with a particular interest in quantifying the impact of gender inequality on social, economic and health outcomes. Jen's PhD focuses on quantifying the mental health effects of unpaid labour and precarious employment in working-age Australians.
Abstract: This thesis quantified the associations between unpaid labour, precarious employment and mental health, particularly as they pertain to gender inequality in Australia. Drawing on longitudinal data and causal epidemiological methods, results provide evidence of a mental health penalty of high unpaid labour and precarious employment for both genders, in addition to high unpaid labour being associated with employment precarity for women. Results highlight that women’s mental health would benefit from greater gender equality in the division of labour
