Francisco: My Journey at a PhD Summer School and the EuHEA Conference 2024

The Motivation Behind My Journey

As a researcher, I believe that stepping out of one's comfort zone and actively seeking opportunities to share knowledge, learn from others, and build connections is crucial for growth. This belief motivated me to attend the PhD summer school and present at an international conference. I knew these experiences would not only allow me to share my research but also help me develop the essential skill of communication, which I've found to be one of the most challenging yet indispensable aspects of research.

Discovering the World of Regenerative Medicine

Attending the Summer by Design program at the University of Toronto was an immersive experience that expanded my understanding of commercializing and translating regenerative medicine. I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation as I entered the first session, which brought together a diverse group of PhD students and postdocs eager to explore the intersection of science, business, and technology.

One memorable moment was a presentation on technology assessment and intellectual property. Listening to it, I realized these were crucial early considerations for assessing the commercial potential of my research. This shifted my perspective on my work. Another highlight was the marketing workshop, which taught me the importance of understanding customer needs and effectively communicating value.

The sessions on manufacturing and scale-up of biotechnologies were challenging, as they were outside my area of expertise. However, I refused to shy away and instead asked numerous questions of the presenters and fellow students. This experience taught me the importance of persistence and curiosity when facing unfamiliar territory.

Overcoming Nerves and Finding Confidence in Vienna

A few weeks later, I traveled to Vienna for the European Health Economics Association’s 2024 conference at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. As I prepared to present my research on health economics and functional genomics, I felt nervous about speaking in front of a large audience for the first time.

However, something remarkable happened that day. Drawing on the communication techniques I had just learned in Toronto, I maintained eye contact, breathed deeply, and used my hands expressively. Gradually, the nerves dissipated, and I found myself connecting with the audience in an unexpected way. The engaging questions that followed my presentation were a testament to the audience's interest, and I walked away with a profound sense of accomplishment.

Reflecting on that moment, I realized how much I had grown in a short time. The confidence I gained from presenting at the conference stemmed from the preparation and experiences at the summer school. This was a powerful reminder that overcoming fear and uncertainty can lead to rewarding outcomes.

Looking Forward

Attending the PhD summer school and international conference has profoundly impacted my research approach and career path. I now have a stronger network and greater confidence in communicating my work. These experiences have reminded me that the future holds endless possibilities beyond our current knowledge.

Moving forward, I'm eager to continue exploring these possibilities and sharing my journey with others on similar paths. My advice is simple: don't hesitate to seize opportunities to learn and grow - you never know where they may lead.
