Title: Mortality of Adults with Childhood-onset Disability

Supervisors: Dr George Disney, Dr Yi Yang, Prof. Christine Imms, Prof. Anne Kavanagh

Abstract: People with disability have reduced life expectancy compared to those without disability. Early mortality reflects poorer health in a population. This PhD will examine, and quantify, mortality inequalities for people with childhood-onset disability. Causal analysis will be used to determine how the social determinants of health interact with disability throughout the life course and determine the extent to which disability-onset in childhood results in different pathways to mortality compared to disability with onset in adult populations.

Bio: Joanna is currently undertaking PhD in the School of Population and Global Health, supported by a Melbourne Disability Institute scholarship. Joanna has a background as a physiotherapist and 18 years clinical experience working with children and adolescents with disability, including 12 years at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Joanna has previously completed a Master of Physiotherapy (Paediatrics) and a Master of Public Health. She hopes her future research will contribute to improved health equality and outcomes for people with childhood disability.
