Title: Robust estimates of intergenerational transmission of drinking
Presenter: Dr Sergey Alexeev
Abstract: This is the first study that uses a large, nationally representative dataset to quantify the intergenerational transmission of alcohol consumption. Drinking is transmitted only from the parent who shares the offspring's gender. For females, the estimated elasticity is higher than for males and takes root at a younger offspring age. Furthermore, for both genders, parental influence is fully established by the early 30s and persists throughout life. An adoptee subsample shows that genes matter for male transmission but not for female. The endogeneity is tested with copula-based internal instrumental variable and found to be empirically negligible.
