Title: Lung cancer screening in the UK and Australia: pathways to implementation
Speaker: Prof David Weller, Centre for Population Health Sciences, University of Edinburgh
Date and time: Wednesday 4th October 2023, 12:00pm - 1:00pm (AEST)
Location: Room 515, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton
Abstract: Based on evidence of reduction in mortality, and patient acceptability, the UK National Screening Committee recently recommended targeted screening for lung cancer in people aged 55 to 74 identified as being at high risk of lung cancer. There has been a similar recommendation in Australia. As countries around the world consider the prospect of lung cancer screening, they need to carefully assess available evidence, and decide on a way forward which accommodates their unique circumstances. Key issues include impact on health inequalities; access in remote locations; recruitment, acceptability/uptake; incidental pathology; workforce, infrastructure and capacity. This presentation will include early results of a lung screening pilot study in Scotland (LUNGSCOT), and a reflection on potential pathways to implementation in Scotland and Australia.
