The Economics of Genomics and Precision Medicine Unit has recently published in Nature Medicine a review article on ‘Determining the value of genomics in healthcare’ .

Led by our Unit Head, A/Prof Ilias Goranitis, and our affiliate member Prof Zornitza Stark, the paper showcases the power of international collaboration (Australia, Canada, England, Hong Kong, and the US) and brings a global perspective to measuring and realising the value of genomics in healthcare.

The article highlights the need to critically assess the value of genomic sequencing to inform evidence-based policy, clinical practice, and implementation. It examines current challenges in conceptualising, measuring, and valuing genomic utility, and outlines key evidence and process barriers in genomic test reimbursement and prioritisation. It also discusses how genomics can be implemented to maximise value and provides practical insights drawn from real-world experience navigating value assessment in a rapidly evolving field.
