Dr Lauren Gibson presented at the VCCC Alliance Equity Symposium in April 2026:

Co-designing a lung cancer screening navigator with CALD patients

Internationally, lung cancer screening uptake is variable. “We need strategies that support the uptake of the lung cancer screening program National Lung Cancer Screening Program in Australia, particularly amongst people who already face barriers accessing health care”, advised lead researcher, Lauren Gibson.

Participant navigation is one such strategy that helps to eliminate barriers to care and address health disparities across the cancer care continuum, inclusive of screening. International experience suggests that participant navigation can help remove barriers to screening by supporting appointment scheduling, care coordination, language assistance and transport.

The Lung Cancer Screening Navigator (CALD) Project aims to develop a navigator model of care to increase National Lung Cancer Screening Program participation among culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Key Takeaways:

*To create a feasible and acceptable model for this program, it is paramount that CALD community members and services providers are engaged and trusting relationships are fostered.
*The navigator’s use of different modes and channels to deliver information regarding the lung cancer screening program is of high importance to reach a wide range of audiences.
*Working with different communities requires personalised approaches specific to their needs.
