Dr Fanny Franchini from the Cancer Health Services Research team took to the stage in Madrid this week to showcase the PRIMCAT project at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2023 Congress.

PRedicting the population health economic IMpact of current and new CAncer Treatments (PRIMCAT) is a data-driven modelling project that aims to shape a more responsive and informed landscape for cancer care in Australia. Dr Franchini is Chief Investigator on the project, which works closely with the Australian Department of Health to ensure that its work translates to impact for Australian cancer patients by informing the Health Technology Assessment process.

Dr Franchini’s presentation explained how her multidisciplinary team designed and established a unique linked dataset offering an unprecedented level of insight into the entire cancer treatment journey, from diagnosis to drug prescriptions, medical services, and hospital admissions. She showcased the steps required to achieve this model and provided a case study on colorectal cancer to demonstrate how it works in action.

“Cancer care is a significant concern worldwide, both for its impact on lives and its cost,” says Dr Franchini.

“Getting a precise understanding of how many patients will need treatment is essential for planning and allocating resources efficiently. PRIMCAT is a powerful tool for decision-makers that aims to predict the number of patients eligible for new cancer treatments in Australia. By reducing uncertainties, we can ensure Australians have rapid access to the latest, most effective cancer therapies.”

Fanny ESMO 2023

The ESMO Congress is a highly influential oncology platform for clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, journalists and healthcare industry representatives from all over the world. Dr Franchini was grateful for the opportunity to present her research to an international audience of cancer care experts, as part of a varied programme.

“I'm deeply thankful to have represented the PRIMCAT team at ESMO2023, which was beyond my expectations,” she says.

“While the latest clinical trial outcomes offered a glimpse into the future of cancer care, it was the Patient Advocacy track that truly resonated with me. It mirrored Australia's focus on prevention, equity, and value-based healthcare.”

“The packed session on AI and real-world evidence highlighted a clear interest for advancements in cancer care. ESMO2023 was a blend of innovation and patient-centric discourse that I'm proud to have been a part of.”
