Disastrous Writing

For a lot of researchers and practitioners in the area of disaster management, there is a looming writing pile that can be difficult to get to.  

This year, we're hosting a new event called Disastrous Writing to help with that.

Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 June 2023

What is it?

Disastrous Writing is a 2-day event bringing together 50 practitioners and researchers together who all need some time to write. Over the two days we will be doing intensive writing sessions interspersed with networking activities to help build possible future collaborations.

The event will be hosted by the University of Melbourne with the support of Natural Hazards Research Australia.

Who can come?

You're welcome to register if you:
a) work or research (including Masters or PhD students) in the area of disaster management,
b) you need some dedicated time to write, and
c) you can get yourself to the University of Melbourne campus on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 June

Is there a cost to attend?

No, there is no cost to attend. We will be asking all participants to bring a 'prize' to contribute to the session (more information will be provided to participants after registration). The prize should be small and cost no more than $5.

What will participants need to do?

Register for the 'Disastrous Writing' session
Complete the pre-event survey (this will be sent closer to June)
Think about all the things you will need to bring (laptop, charger, pens, reference materials etc)
Come ready to write

I work part time. Can I still come?

We know there are a lot of people who are in part time roles and this can present a barrier for participating in workshops . If you can attend one of the days but not the other due to your role being part-time, you are welcome to register for only one day.

I want to come but can't clear my diary for both days. Should I register?

These days are intensive sessions to help you get into a different mode of work and write. If you don't think you can clear your schedule to attend, it may not be the right time for you to register.

How many people can attend?

We have space for 50 people to attend the sessions. If there is a waitlist when you try to register, it means that all the spaces have been filled. If you register for the waitlist, we will let you know when a spot becomes available.

Can I get support to travel to Melbourne?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide support for travel. To attend you need to be able to get to the University of Melbourne campus in Parkville.
