The Bigger Picture Project was part of the Fire Recovery Unit's fifth year anniversary event. It gave people the chance to share signs of recovery that had occurred over the five years since the 2009 Victorian Bushfires. These photos were initially hosted on the Piece Together website, however this website has been decommissioned so we will continue to display these wonderful photos at this location. These photos were taken by community members and represent hope, something about their current life or something that made them laugh, along with some photos that showed the difficulties people have been through.
We feel privileged that we are able to share these photos with you - please take the time to admire the talented photographers and their journeys.
These photos were also digitally displayed at the Fifth Anniversary Remembrance Event hosted by the Victorian Government at the Melbourne Museum on Sunday 9th February 2014.

As a Trauma Counsellor working with residents of Kinglake and Marysville one important component of their recovery was believing in hope. Hope meant many things to different people, such as being able to move on, make it through the next day, believing life would return to normal in the future etc. This picture for me meant devastation and hope in the here and now which is depicted by the green shoot on the blackened tree trunk. -
At a Habitat 'Brush with Kindness' project on Doctor's Creek Road at Clonbinane I saw a vehicle that had been burnt in the bushfires. The heat was enough to melt the windscreen and destroy the vehicle, yet on one corner the paint and rubber tyres were still intact. It highlighted to me how fast and random the fire caused such devastation on that day. -

In April 2013, the 1st Australian Steelband Festival was held in Marysville. Organised by the local community and steelband members, the Festival attracted 10 national and international bands. The Calypso Night, featuring Nicky Bomba and Bustmento and the Trinidadian Connection was a highlight. -
In August 2011 the largest Habitat 'Brush with Kindness' team to-date visited 2 neighbouring properties at Clonbinane to help clear fallen and dead trees, with log splitting and brush-cutting work. Nearly 60 volunteers worked to help both families in the re-building process. -

The Wissell Family are part of the Tree Project. A fabulous initiative, which 'is a symbol of remembrance for the lives lost and for the people who fought to save lives. It is also a monument to renewal and to the spirit of fraternity that springs from skilled blacksmiths across Australia and around the world' (The Australian Blacksmiths Association, 2009). www.treeproject.abavic.org.au -
