Exploring the experience of learning genomics in the workplace

Description of Research Project

Advances in genomic testing technologies (‘genomics’) have been demonstrated to transform how healthcare can be delivered across the life course and various health conditions. To realise these benefits, numerous countries are investing in large-scale initiatives to implement genomics into their respective healthcare systems. However, the consensus from the literature is that the wider, non-genetics medical workforce historically lacks competence and confidence in genomics. Workplace learning is a fundamental component in healthcare professional training but can go underacknowldged beyond formal training programs.

This PhD project combines these two areas by exploring doctors’ experiences of learning genomics in the workplace. Generating findings over three research phases, this PhD proposes the pragmatic utility of workplace learning as an implementation theory to support workforce preparedness and innovation implementation and adoption strategies.

Biography

Alice is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute. She is also a research assistant on the Lineage study, an MRFF-funded project conducting law, sociology and ethics research in genomics data governance.

Alice completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in biochemistry and genetics, and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Monash University. Her Honours research project used social science mixed methods to explore creativity in biomedical sciences education. She is interested in exploring the adoption and implementation of innovations and emerging technologies across science, education and health. She has experience using qualitative and social science mixed methods.
