Continuous Professional Development for Frontline Health Workers - Solomon Islands

Project Details

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an important part of the medical and nursing profession, allowing health workers to retain knowledge and skills and keep abreast of new developments in the profession. In the Solomon Islands, a formal system for CPD are not in place and many frontline health workers have limited access to or knowledge of the opportunities for CPD.

With funding from UNICEF, our team is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) in the Solomon Islands, along with local training institutions to expand access to learning opportunities and institutionalise CPD as a requirement for all health staff.

The project entails three key components:

  • Establishing institutional systems and structures to support CPD for the health workforce on an ongoing basis
  • Developing and pilot testing two CPD training modules
  • Documenting potential barriers, enablers and lessons learned for the implementation of CPD systems in the Solomon Islands

This project aims to create sustainable systems to build the capacity of health workers operating in remote and challenging environments - empowering primary healthcare workers and improving the quality of care they can provide to their community.
