Announcing a New PhD Program in Mental Health

The School is delighted to announce a new interdisciplinary PhD Program in Mental Health, which will have its first intake in 2018. The new program is a joint initiative of MSPS; the Centre for Mental Health, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health; and the Department of Psychiatry, Melbourne Medical School.

It will offer a unified training experience to a cohort of students drawn from the diverse disciplines that examine the mental health domain, including psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric epidemiology, mental health policy, psychiatric nursing, social work, general practice and history and philosophy of medicine. Students will continue to sit within their departmental ‘homes’, but will take part in a suite of joint activities that include online coursework, joint seminars, colloquium series, and peer learning and mentoring opportunities.

The program aims to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and inter-professional understanding, and through its ‘doctoral academy’ it will develop career-relevant skills and build a network of future researcher leaders. We encourage new and recently commenced students to apply, and urge supervisors to promote it to suitable students. Stay tuned for a call for applications and contact Professors Nick Haslam (nhaslam@unimelb.edu.au), Jane Pirkis (j.pirkis@unimelb.edu.au) or Malcolm Hopwood (mhopwood@unimelb.edu.au) for further information.
