Filling a critical knowledge gap
The COVID19 pandemic has revealed failings in global capacity to prepare for and respond to a truly global pandemic. The Nossal Institute for Global Health sees health outcomes through a whole system lens. There has been a distinct lack of multidisciplinary approaches to pandemic preparedness, and a particular neglect of how economic, political and social dimensions shape pandemic risk, preparedness, responses and impacts in different societies.
In response to increased demand for expertise, the Nossal team have fast tracked the development of a new subject to fill a critical gap in, how pandemics are prepared for and can be responded to. While a focus on clinical and/or epidemiological aspects of a pandemic is important, human health outcomes are reliant on the interactions of multiple systems.
There is much to learn from adopting a broad multidisciplinary perspective. Associate Professor Linda Bennet
Pandemic Preparedness and Response, draws on examples from SARS, Zika, Swine and Avian Influenza, Ebola, HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, to demonstrate the need for diverse approaches in preparing for and responding to pandemics. The course will be comparing different pandemic experiences across the globe and using case studies from a range of countries.
Who can enrol?
- Master of Public Health students
- University of Melbourne Masters students (with permission from their course coordinator)
- University of Melbourne medical students as part of their undergraduate degree
- Professionals working in health with an undergraduate qualification (available through the University of Melbourne Community Access Program)
Pandemic Preparedness and Response is offered in dual delivery format over an intensive 2 week period. The subject will run in block mode with the live teaching period from 6-17 September 2021. Enrol now!
