Professor Peter Annear

Professor Peter Annear is a health economist and health financing specialist who has worked in international development since the 1970s. He has worked in Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Fiji and other Asian and Pacific countries as a consultant, educator and trainer. He has advised Ministries of Health and development agencies.

Peter graduated in Economics from the University of Melbourne and completed a PhD at Deakin University in global healthy policy. He joined the Nossal Institute in 2009 and was the Academic Head of the AusAID Health Policy and Health Financing Policy Hub through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade at the Nossal.

Peter was Country Program Manager for Save the Children in Cambodia and Asian Regional Manager for International Development Support Services. He’s worked on projects with WHO, the World Bank, AusAID and other development partners to assist Ministries of Health in policy development and planning. He’s a Board Member of the Asia Network for Health Systems Strengthening and is Head of the Nossal Institute Research Hub.

Peter’s skills are in operational research and translation of research to policy. He was Chief Investigator on two research grants under the Australian Development Research Awards through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Using findings from this research, he helped develop policy for Health Equity Funds for the poor in Cambodia and Laos.

Peter’s goal is to build knowledge and experience among colleagues in Australia, Asia and the Pacific and so help improve the quality, delivery and equity of health and social outcomes.
